A new era in the history of Darjeeling Hills dawns with the establishment of Darjeeling Hills University in the Himalayan foothills of West Bengal. It will open up new vistas in the academic arena of the hilly terrain of Darjeeling Himalayas. Lying amidst the pine-studded slopes of the Eastern Himalayas, set against the snow-capped peaks and blanketed by the emerald-green tea and cinchona plantation, this seat of learning aims to cater for the long-awaited need of higher education and research activities in this region. The objective of the University will be to disseminate knowledge by offering courses in higher education and research facilities with special emphasis on the amelioration of the socio-economic status of the people of this region as well as the widening of their academic, intellectual and cultural horizon. The foundation stone of Darjeeling Hills University was laid in September 2018 at Jogighat, Mungpoo, where the construction is ongoing. It was included in the University Grants Commission’s List of Universities in September 2022. The only university in the Darjeeling hills is currently functioning from the new ITI premises at Bhasmey, Mungpoo.
