The 2005 Chhattisgarh legislature established Pandit Sundarlal Sharma (Open) University, Bilaspur. On January 20, 2005, the Chhattisgarh governor approved. This university was named after Chhattisgarh freedom fighter Pandit Sundarlal Sharma. Former Indian Vice Prime Minister Shri Lal Krishna Advani ji inaugurated the University. Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Minister of Higher Education, Minister of Finance, and many dignitaries attended the inaugural function. Dr. Sharad Kumar Vajpai became the first Registrar on 15 March 2005, while Prof. T. D. Sharma became the first Vice Chancellor on 2 March 2005 and served until 21 January 2010. Dr. A. R. Chandrakar was the second Vice Chancellor from 22 January 2010 to 2 February 2015. On 3 February 2015, Prof. Bansh Gopal Singh became the third Vice Chancellor, serving until 2 March 2020. Dr. Bansh Gopal Singh was reappointed on March 3, 2020. The university occupies 70 acres. The University's well-planned infrastructure includes administrative, examination, academic, library, bank, canteen, furnished hostel and guest house, officer's buildings, teaching and non-teaching accommodations. Three helicopter pads are available for distinguished guests. The campus is lush with trees, ornamental, and flowering plants, and two small ponds on either side of the university's main entrance gate increase water levels and campus beauty.
