Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University was founded to reach the unreached through open and distance learning and build a knowledge-based society. KKHSOU, established under the KKHSOU, Act' 2005 enacted by the Govt. of Assam and published in the Assam Gazette (extraordinary) dt 29/9/05, has been recognised by the Former Distance Education Council, New Delhi (now DEB,UGC) vide letter no. DEC/Misc/07/5957 dated 03/10/07. Under Section 22 of the UGC Act, 1956, the University Grants Commission has authorised the University to grant degrees. Along with IGNOU, it is the fourteenth and only state Open University in NE India. Patgaon,Rani,Guwahati is the University's headquarters. As Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Srinath Baruah, former Professor of Economics at Gauhati University, started the University. With the motto "Education Beyond Barriers" of age, academic background, and geography, the University was founded to promote education to the unreached through the Open and Distance Learning System. The university develops and provides high-quality higher education and training using the latest educational inputs and technology. The University promises to provide equal higher education opportunities to deprived and denied groups as well as new students due to its inherent flexibility in pace, place, and evaluation. The University's programmes can educate all regional students. University courses match the national curriculum. Along with its traditional programmes, the University offers professional Certificate and Diploma programmes to allow state college and university students to take additional courses.
