The Nalanda Mahavihara ruins are almost synonymous with Nalanda. Nalanda recalls ancient Mahavihara, a centre of Buddhist education from the 5th to the 12th centuries AD. Nalada Mahavihara, Nalanda is widely credited with developing Buddhist education. Many Nalanda Acaryas spread knowledge and Buddhist culture worldwide. The first president of India, His Excellency Dr. Rajendra Prasad, proposed the Nava Nalanda Mahavihara to revive the ancient seat of Buddhist learning at Nalanda. The first building's foundation stone was engraved on November 20, 1951: “Let the Nalanda sun rise from the summit of this rock to brighten the vernacular (lokabhasa in pali) after its nights of darkness (period of its obscurity).” With this goal in mind, the Government of Bihar established the "Magadh Institute of Post-Graduate Studies and Research in Pali and Allied Languages and Buddhist Learning" at Nalanda in 1951 at Ven. Bhikshu Jagadish Kashyap's request. It became Nava Nalanda Mahavihara. Bhikshu Jagadish Kashyap founded and directed Nava Nalanda Mahavihara until February 1955. His 41-volume critical edition of the PaliTipitaka in Devanagari script was a major achievement. It sold out quickly. This institute was founded to create a Nalanda Mahavihara-style centre for Pali and Buddhist studies. The Institute was residential and limited to Indian and foreign students from the start. The University Grant Commission declared Nava Nalanda Mahavihara, Nalanda a Deemed University on November 13, 2006. The Mahavihara's campus is 100 km from Patna on the southern bank of Indrapuskarani Lake. The Nalanda University ruins are near the northern bank.
