Swami Rama, founder of Promoting Society, Himalayan Institute Hospital Trust (HIHT), was born in 1925 in Village-Toli, Malla Badalpur, Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand (formerly Uttar Pradesh) to a learned Brahmin family. A Bengali yogi and saint in the Himalayas raised him after he was orphaned. He studied Yoga and Philosophy in Himalayan monasteries as a youth. He travelled to Tibet to study with his grandmaster, and Mahatma Gandhi, Sri Aurobindo, and Rabindranath Tagore mentored and inspired him. Later, he studied in Bangalore, Prayaga, Varanasi, and Oxford. He succeeded Dr. Kurtkoti as Shankaracharya of Karvirpitham, Central India, at 24. He abolished temple devadasis and made temples accessible to all during his term. He left his high office in 1952 to meditate in the Himalayas. After intense meditation and pranayama, he was determined to serve humanity by bringing Eastern teachings to the West. Swami Rama studied Western Philosophy and Psychology and taught Eastern philosophy at many Western universities, encouraged by his master. . He then founded Sadhana Mandir Trust in Rishikesh, India. He graduated from Darbhanga Medical College in 1960. In Japan, he founded a major spiritual centre. In 1969, his master sent him to the US to bridge science and spirituality. Swami Rama controlled involuntary physiological parameters like body temperature, brain waves, and heart rate in a lab at the Meninger Foundation in Topeka, Kansas. These experiments, published in many top scientific journals, led to the psychosomatic origins of most diseases, biofeedback, and holistic health paradigms. Swami Rama founded the Himalayan Institute of Yoga, Science, and Philosophy of the U.S.A. in the early 1970s and became known as a yogi, teacher, philosopher, author, poet, humanist, and philanthropist in his 23 years there. In 1989, he returned to India to found the Himalayan Institute Hospital Trust in Jolly Grant, Dehradun. The trust opened a multi-specialty hospital and medical college in 1994 and 1995 under Swami Rama's direction. .
