Pragjyotish College, founded seven years after Independence on September 1, 1954, became a beacon of learning and a symbol of aspirations for the people of Assam eager to build a new nation. As the founder Principal of Pragjyotish College, eminent scholar and litterateur Pandit Tirthanath Sarma actively contributed to nation building. Pragjyotish College, originally an arts college, is now one of Guwahati's top universities. It is now a well-known undergraduate college offering multiple degrees. Pragjyotish College is on the western bank of the Bharalu, a rivulet in western Guwahati, about 1 kilometre from its confluence with the Brahmaputra. It is 4 km from Guwahati Railway Station and 20 km from Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. The college overlooks Kamakhya's Nilachal Hills. The college emblem features the motto "" (May our study make us illumined) and a conch shell at the centre of an eight-petalled full-blown beautiful lotus, symbolising pure knowledge and the relationship between teacher and student, praying to the Almighty for energy, protection, maintenance, and peace and bliss. Pragjyotish College has produced a galaxy of distinguished alumni in its 60 years of existence. 2013–14 was the college's Diamond Jubilee.
